Les premi\u00e8res lueurs du jour pointent  \u00e0 l&rsquo;horizon. Je tourne un peu dans le lit, j\u2019essaie de me rendormir, en vain. Fichu d\u00e9calage horaires. Moi qui suis habituellement insensible aux plaisanteries de mon rythme circadien, j&rsquo;en fais ce matin les frais. Finalement, je me l\u00e8ve. Il est 5h45, je prends mon appareil, j&rsquo;enfile un short, et je sors. Seuls les chiens veillent. \u00c0 peine me voient-ils arriver qu&rsquo;ils s&rsquo;agitent. Les oiseaux commencent \u00e0 chanter, et <strong>une brume \u00e9paisse flotte sur la rivi\u00e8re Kwa\u00ef<\/strong>. Tout est paisible, flou, presque irr\u00e9el. L\u2019eau est immobile. Les aigrettes d\u00e9coupent le ciel du matin dans un ballet parfait. \u00c0 ce moment pr\u00e9cis, j\u2019ai l\u2019impression que tout m\u2019appartient. Une grande table en bois, des cr\u00eapes encore chaudes, du pain grill\u00e9, du caf\u00e9, et des voix fran\u00e7aises autour. Ici, c\u2019est <strong>un petit cocon francophone<\/strong> dans la jungle tha\u00eflandaise. On parle doucement, encore impr\u00e9gn\u00e9s de la douceur du r\u00e9veil. Puis vient le moment de retrouver <strong>les stars du lieu : Tao et Punssap<\/strong>. Deux \u00e9l\u00e9phantes immenses, lentes, tranquilles. La premi\u00e8re activit\u00e9 de la journ\u00e9e : les nourrir. Des dizaines de kilos de bananes, qu\u2019elles avalent sans m\u00eame m\u00e2cher. Elle vit ici avec son mari et g\u00e8re le sanctuaire depuis quelques mois. Elle nous raconte l\u2019histoire du lieu, et surtout celle de Mama, la fondatrice. Une<strong> Belge passionn\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phants, qui a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de cr\u00e9er un lieu \u00e0 part<\/strong>. Un sanctuaire \u00e9thique, o\u00f9 les animaux ne sont ni exploit\u00e9s, ni contraints. Ici, les \u00e9l\u00e9phants se reposent, mangent (beaucoup), r\u00e9apprennent la lenteur, apr\u00e8s une vie de labeur. Ici, les \u00e9l\u00e9phantes sont libres une tr\u00e8s grande partie de la journ\u00e9e : pas de corde, pas de cornac autoritaire. On les suit \u00e0 distance, elles font leur vie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">El\u00e9phant : une condition difficile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>En Tha\u00eflande, la vie d\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9phant n\u2019est pas toujours synonyme de jungle et de libert\u00e9. Longtemps utilis\u00e9s comme animaux de trait dans l\u2019industrie foresti\u00e8re, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 massivement reconvertis dans le tourisme. Balades \u00e0 dos d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phant, spectacles de cirque, peintures \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9alis\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 la trompe&#8230; derri\u00e8re les images exotiques, <strong>la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 est souvent brutale<\/strong>. D\u00e8s leur plus jeune \u00e2ge, ces animaux subissent le <em>phajaan<\/em>, un rituel violent destin\u00e9 \u00e0 briser leur esprit pour les rendre ob\u00e9issants.
